About Me

Amber Alexis Serrano is a second-generation Mexican American who has always found beauty in chaos. Growing up in a multigenerational home, there has never been a dull moment in her life. As part of Mexican culture, women are expected to take control of the atmosphere around them. For Amber, she found that type of control through editing and loves every moment of creating and experimenting with footage.

Artist Statement

When I was 17, I directed a theater play with a newborn in my arms and two toddlers on my hip. I went to a performing arts high school, back when I was still pursuing a dance career, and as part of my thesis program, I had to write, direct, and film a theater production. My youngest sister had just been born two weeks prior and what was meant to be an hour of watching my siblings turned into almost the whole day. Truthfully, it was the best lesson that could have happened to me. As I was changing diapers and giving stage directions I realized that I enjoyed organizing chaos and turning it into something smooth, concise, and beautiful.

That is what editing is to me. It organizes chaos and creates an impactful story that can be told in numerous ways. I focus my work on pacing and storytelling more than flashy visuals because the stories that create more of an impact are the ones that make the audience feel what our characters feel. My goal as an editor is to create unique stories that start a conversation. I want to edit in a way that makes it seem like I was never there and the story just happened on its own.

With my background in music, theater, and computer science I understand all aspects of performance, and technology, and how they combine to create an emotional experience for the audience. This unique perspective allows me to approach editing with a rhythm and flow, like choreography, where every cut and transition is intentional, leading the viewer through a seamless story. I enjoy what I do and strive to be the best I can be in my craft.
